What a UK phone check returns
Every row that goes through the UK checker comes back with three separate answers: whether the number is structurally valid under Ofcom's numbering scheme, what the +44 number actually resolves to, and what line type sits behind it. The three answers do different jobs. Validity decides whether the row survives cleanup. Country and range resolution decides which rules and formats apply. Line type decides whether the number can receive SMS at all and which channel the row belongs on.
Use this checker for UK CRM cleanup, SMS campaign preparation, WhatsApp filtering, call center list routing, lead vendor audit, and fraud/risk screening. We built this page around the range map below because it's the part teams get wrong most often on a first pass. For broader lists, use Phone List Cleaning, Validate International Phone Numbers, or the phone validation guide for the general workflow.
The UK range map: what prefixes do and don't tell you
UK numbering is range-based, and the ranges carry meaning. 01 and 02 are geographic landline ranges — 020 for London, 0161 for Manchester, and so on. 07 is the mobile range, which matters most for SMS and messaging campaigns. 08 numbers are business-rate service ranges, and 09 is premium rate, which you should never see on a customer list without asking why.
Two complications keep prefixes from being the whole story. First, 070: UK personal numbering sits one digit away from the mobile range, and Ofcom has repeatedly warned that 070 numbers appear in scams precisely because they can redirect calls anywhere while looking like a personal mobile. A 070 entry on a business list is a review signal, not a segment. Second, portability: a mobile keeps its 07 prefix when the owner switches networks, so the prefix ties to nothing about the current carrier — the carrier lookup reads current allocation data for that, and the number portability guide explains how stale that prefix-level data gets.
Normalization: getting UK numbers into +44 shape
UK lists arrive in every shape: 07700 900123, +44 7700 900123, 0044 7700 900123, 07700900123 with a stray space, or a 10-digit local landline missing its trunk zero. The checker normalizes all of them to +44 E.164 before scoring, so the same row doesn't count twice or fail twice. The E.164 format guide covers the rules, and the phone list cleaning guide shows where normalization sits in a full cleanup.
Valid doesn't mean reachable
A UK number can pass every format rule and still be useless for SMS. Landlines and VoIP endpoints pass validation the same as mobiles, and no SMS gateway delivers to the first or reliably reaches the second. Line type is the field that settles it, which is why the checker pairs validation with a line-type result per row. For marketing use, UK GDPR and PECR expectations follow the message regardless of channel: a lawful basis, clear identification, and a working opt-out.
Carrier and line type lookup for UK numbers
UK validation can be paired with UK Carrier Lookup and Carrier Type Checker to separate mobile, landline, VoIP, and review records.
Security and limits
UK phone number results are data quality signals, not identity proof or guaranteed reachability. Coverage and freshness depend on carrier and data source. Review Security and the Privacy Policy.
FAQ
What do UK number prefixes tell you before a check?
A lot, but less than it used to. 01 and 02 are geographic landline ranges, 07 is the mobile range, 08 and 09 are service and premium ranges. Portability and VoIP blur the boundaries, so prefixes work as a first read while the line-type result settles the row.
Why is a 070 number on my UK list a warning sign?
UK personal numbering uses 070, not 07, and Ofcom has repeatedly warned that 070 numbers appear in scams because they can redirect calls anywhere. Treat a 070 entry as a review signal before any budget goes near it.
Does a valid UK number mean the number can receive SMS?
No. Validity is a format question; reachability is a line-type question. A valid landline or VoIP endpoint will not receive an SMS, which is why the checker pairs validation with line type.
What rules apply to contacting UK numbers for marketing?
UK GDPR and PECR as the ICO interprets them: a lawful basis for each contact, clear identification of your business, and a working opt-out, regardless of channel.
Can I check UK numbers in bulk?
Yes. Upload CSV/TXT files or use the Phone Validation API for bulk UK phone validation.
