Short answer: a UK WhatsApp number checker tells you which +44 numbers actually hold a WhatsApp account. Most UK mobiles do — but most is not all, and the gap is exactly what the check is for.
Built for business list cleaning, enrichment, routing, and review workflows. Use it with owned, consented, or otherwise lawful datasets.
Scope note. ZelNum checks whether a number shows WhatsApp registration and availability signals through licensed upstream providers. It never sends messages, never logs in to any account, and never returns the owner's identity. ZelNum is not affiliated with WhatsApp. Using results for unsolicited outreach or tracking people is prohibited under the Acceptable Use Policy.
Every +44 number can be checked against WhatsApp registration data. The result answers one question per row: does this number currently hold a WhatsApp account? Paired with a line-type lookup, you also learn whether the row sits in the 07 mobile range, an 01/02 geographic range, or a VoIP block.
The two fields together split a UK list into segments that behave differently: registered mobiles that will receive your campaign, registered landlines or VoIP rows that deserve scrutiny, and unregistered numbers that belong on the SMS track. Teams that skip the check discover the split through undelivered messages instead.

Registration tells you the channel exists; line type tells you whether the row is a mobile, landline, or VoIP endpoint.
Send WhatsApp-registered, non-registered, and review records to separate files for the right channel strategy.
The UK is one of WhatsApp's strongest markets. Unlike the SMS-and-iMessage-first United States, WhatsApp is the everyday messaging app for a large majority of UK mobile users, so a check on a UK mobile list returns registered rows far more often than the same check on a US list. Campaign planning on a UK list can lean on WhatsApp in ways a US campaign cannot.
But near-universal is not universal. Opt-outs, secondary devices, and work-phone splits still leave a share of numbers unregistered, and the share drifts as people change devices. The most common surprise we hear from teams moving US-style workflows onto UK lists is how high the match rate runs, and then how far from 100% it still falls. Running the check before a send costs a fraction of a wasted campaign, and the guide to checking if a number is on WhatsApp explains what the result does and does not prove. The WhatsApp marketing list cleaning guide covers where the check fits in a full prep workflow.
Genuine UK mobiles sit in the 07xxx range, so most WhatsApp accounts on a UK list will present as +44 7xxx numbers. The lookalike is UK personal numbering: 070 numbers, which Ofcom describes as numbers that can be redirected to any phone line anywhere. Ofcom has repeatedly warned that 070 numbers feature in scams (including callers claiming to be from WhatsApp) precisely because they look almost identical to a personal mobile.
On a business list, a 070 entry is a review signal, not a segment. Treat rows in that range the way you would treat the disposable endpoints covered in the VoIP detection guide: verify before you spend budget on them. Portability complicates the rest of the range — a 07 number keeps its prefix when the owner switches networks, which is why the carrier lookup reads current allocation data instead of guessing from the prefix.
| UK range | What it is | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| 07xxx | Genuine UK mobile — where WhatsApp accounts live. | Primary campaign range, after the registration check. |
| 070 | Personal numbering. Redirect-capable, flagged by Ofcom in scam warnings. | Review signal. Verify before any budget goes near it. |
| 01 / 02 | Geographic landlines. Registerable only via voice verification. | WhatsApp-eligible but SMS-dead. Check line type. |
| 08 / 09 | Service and premium-rate ranges. | Should not be on a customer list. Ask why it's there. |
UK teams sometimes assume the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) only cover SMS and email. The ICO's position is broader: direct marketing through messaging apps is still direct marketing, so UK GDPR and PECR expectations follow the message onto WhatsApp. In practice that means a lawful basis for contacting each person, clear identification of your business, and a way to opt out that actually works.
A registration check supports the hygiene side of that duty. It confirms the channel is viable before you send, and it keeps your campaign records aligned with the channels your contacts actually use. If your broader workflow screens for telemarketing compliance, the DNC and compliance scrubbing guide shows how channel-level checks fit the sequence.
